We managed to capture this on video over the weekend and thought there would be plenty of you who would like to see it. This is a bear cub at Tremont. His mother had already crossed the stream and he was somewhat less than enthusiastic about making the plunge, and we can understand. The water was a bit high and pretty cold. You’ll see how the lense on the camera kept fogging up as I pulled it out for the first time of the morning.

The guide calendar always seems to slow down in November even as the fishing tends to get better for a few weeks. Thanksgiving weekend is usually the last rush we have before things all but shut down for us. This is the time of year when we get stuff done, and we have some big stuff in the works.

We’re just about to unveil our line of R&R Fly Fishing leaders and tippet plus strike indicators. We are so jazzed about that! We’ve also got our trip to Yellowstone Country next fall plus our Hazel Creek camps here in the Smokies. There’s a tweak to our Fly of the Month program, plus new installments of our video blog.

Stay tuned! There’s good stuff on the way!

It’s the same old story every year. October in the Smokies is incredible with vibrant autumn colors, beautiful weather, rising trout, and plenty of fishermen on the river. Then when the calendar flips over to November most of the fishermen have called it a season but the color is still there, the weather is still great, and yes, the trout are still rising.

Here’s your fly fishing moment of Zen…

For those of you who are wondering, yes, the brown trout are really moving around now. We’ve seen very few actually spawning, but plenty cruising the tailouts of long runs. We’ve got some good photos on the way.

From our friends at TroutHunter in Island Park, Idaho comes this video that shows what it takes to get on the Henry’s Fork in the early season. By the way, while we’ve been fishing the Smokies and floating since March, right now is early season in Yellowstone Country.

We’re hosting a trip to TroutHunter this September and can’t wait!

We’ve had a wet spring in the Smoky Mountains and East Tennessee and this has led to a few days of blown out streams, but fishing has been excellent for the most part. The large tailwater rivers have been too high most of the time for effective fishing, but we have found a few times to float the Tuckaseegee and Hiwassee Rivers.

Wildlife has been active and we regularly see wild turkeys along the stream.

Hatches have been very good. Quill Gordons, Blue Quill, and Early Brown Stoneflies have all pulled trout to the surface. Mornings are fishing best with nymphs and the hatches come on strong in the afternoon. All of the trout in Great Smoky Mountains National Park are wild. Although they rarely get very big, they are exceptionally colorful and put up a great fight.

When we have floated this spring we have focused our efforts on fishing with streamers. We typically use a six weight fly rod rigged with a 15′ sink tip fly line and large streamers in size #4. We have caught some nice rainbow trout and a few brookies on the Tuckaseegee, but brown trout have been the primary catch with this method.

We got off to an early start with nice weather arriving in late February. It looks like we’re making up for it now since we’ve had quite a bit of rain over the last week or so. This has caused plenty of high water.

The Quill Gordons started to hatch but the high water has put them on hold for a little while. We expect water levels to fall by early next week and the fishing should be very good then.
